Boiler Manuals & Fault-Finding Guide

Before you call an engineer, check your boiler's manual and run through a few simple checks below. It can save time and money — and we're always here if you need us.

Start with the basics

How to find your boiler model

The model number is the quickest way to find the right instructions. Take a minute to check these details before searching the manuals below.

  1. 01

Find the data plate or label. Look on the front, underside or side of the boiler. It may be behind a flap, but do not remove the boiler casing.

  2. 02

Note the make and model. Write down the full name, such as Worcester Greenstar 30i, including any numbers or letters after it.

  3. 03

Record any error code. If the display shows a code or the lights are flashing, take a note or a clear photo before you look it up.

  4. 04

Find the matching manual. Use the make below, then compare the model name on the PDF library page with the label on your boiler.

A few things to check

Common boiler problems & quick checks

Important: never attempt gas work yourself. Always use a Gas Safe registered engineer for anything involving gas or the inside of your boiler.

01

No hot water or heating

Check the boiler has power, the display is on, and the thermostat is calling for heat. If the boiler has been switched off, follow the restart instructions in its manual.

02

Boiler pressure too low

Look at the pressure gauge. If it is below the range shown in your manual, repressurise to around 1–1.5 bar using the filling loop only if the manual says it is safe to do so.

03

Radiators cold at the bottom

Cold spots at the bottom can mean air or sludge in the system. Bleed the radiators carefully, then check the pressure again. Persistent cold spots may need a service or powerflush.

04

Boiler keeps losing pressure

Check visible pipework and radiators for leaks. Pressure that keeps dropping could point to a system fault, so call an engineer rather than repeatedly topping it up.

Still stuck? Call us on 01904 530 663 or contact us.

05

Error codes or flashing lights

Look the code up in the manual and write it down. A reset may be explained there, but keep the code to hand when you call if the problem returns.

Still stuck? Call us on 01904 530 663 or contact us.

06

Strange noises or kettling

Banging, whistling, gurgling or rumbling can be caused by sludge or restricted circulation. It usually needs a proper service rather than repeated resets.

Still stuck? Call us on 01904 530 663 or contact us.

07

Pilot light or ignition issues

Follow the manual’s restart guidance if it has one. Never attempt gas work yourself or remove the boiler casing—call a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Still stuck? Call us on 01904 530 663 or contact us.

08

Boiler leaking

If it is safe, turn off the water supply to the boiler and switch the boiler off. Keep clear of hot water and call an engineer as soon as possible.
